Abstract

This study aims to examine the synergy and integrity of leadership in fostering a spirit of sports at the junior secondary school level, with a focus on the development of Petanque at SMP Negeri 3 Labuhanhaji Barat, South Aceh. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation. The findings show that transformational leadership by the principal and participative leadership by the physical education teacher are key factors in shaping a character-based sports culture. Petanque, a relatively new sport in the school environment, has proven to be an effective medium for instilling values such as discipline, responsibility, and teamwork. These findings broaden the discourse on character education through inclusive and contextual alternative sports. The study recommends policies that support the diversification of sports disciplines in schools, professional development for physical education teachers, and cross-sector collaboration to strengthen the educational sports ecosystem. The implications of these findings suggest that appropriate leadership styles can serve as a strategic lever for character education reform through sports in schools.
