The sustainability of regional languages and scripts, one of which is the Makassar Lontarak script, faces serious challenges due to globalization and changes in communication patterns of the digital generation. At the primary education level, learning the Lontarak script remains very limited, both in terms of the length of learning time and the quality of teaching methods, particularly in the Pangkajene and Kepulauan Regency. This study aims to examine the need to develop interactive android-based learning media for teaching the Lontarak Makassar script to fifth-grade elementary school students. The approach used was a qualitative descriptive approach in the needs analysis phase through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student questionnaires. Data were analyzed thematically and supplemented with quantitative descriptive data to uncover pedagogical gaps, technological readiness, and learning preferences. The findings indicate a mismatch between traditional learning methods and the learning characteristics of the digital generation, limited use of multimodal media, and a significant need for media that presents script animations, pronunciation audio, and real-time feedback. This indicates that learning the Lontarak script is not fully aligned with the principles of cognitive development and multimedia learning theory. Theoretically, this study adds to the integration of cognitive, sociocultural, and multimedia learning perspectives in efforts to preserve regional scripts. Practically, the results provide a conceptual and empirical foundation for the development of interactive android-based learning media that is contextual, adaptive, and focused on revitalizing cultural literacy at the elementary system.
