Abstract

Students’ systems thinking skills still require strengthening through the implementation of innovative and contextual learning strategies. This study
aims to examine the effect of using metaphorical visual media on improving the systems thinking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Plumbon. This study employed a quasi-experimental approach with a Nonequivalent Pretest–Posttest Control Group design involving two groups, namely the experimental class and the control class. Data were collected through a systems thinking skills test administered before and after the treatment, and were analyzed using the non-parametric Mann–Whitney test. The results of the analysis showed that the average N-Gain in the experimental class reached 0.62, which is categorized as moderate, while the control class only reached 0.32, categorized as low. In addition, the Mann–Whitney test results showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the two groups. These findings suggest that the use of metaphorical visual media provides a more optimal improvement compared to conventional learning. Thus, metaphorical visual media have been proven to be effective and significant in improving students’ systems thinking skills.
