Understanding concepts and collaboration skills are very important to develop in supporting 21st century education. This study aims to analyze theeffectiveness of Discovery Learning with a STEM approach integrated with a virtual laboratory on the topic of simple machines in improving conceptual understanding and collaboration skills among eighth-grade junior high school students. The study employed a one-group pretest–posttest experimental design involving 31 students. Data were collected through a conceptual understanding test and a collaboration questionnaire, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro–Wilk test, the paired sample t-test, Cohen’s d effect size, and N-Gain. The results showed an increase in the average conceptual understanding score from 55.16 to 64.52, and in collaboration from 37.00 to 39.53. The paired t-test yielded Sig. (2-tailed) values of 0.001 for conceptual understanding and 0.000 for collaboration, indicating significant differences. The effect size values of 0.80 (conceptual understanding) and 1.07 (collaboration) fall into the large category, while the N-Gain scores of 0.21 and 0.17 are categorized as low. These findings indicate that Discovery Learning with a STEM approach is effective in enhancing conceptual understanding and collaboration, although the relative improvement toward the maximum score still needs to be further optimized.References
